1. Rainwater Harvesting: How to Actually Size a System

The calculation is straightforward: roof catchment area (sq ft) × annual rainfall (inches) × 0.623 gallons per sq ft per inch of rain = annual harvest potential.2 A 1,000 sq ft roof in a 40-inch annual rainfall area yields roughly 25,000 gallons per year.2 On the usage side, a household of four typically needs 40–80 gallons per day for basic living, meaning roughly 1,200–2,400 gallons per month, plus a 20–50% buffer for dry spells.2

2. Rainwater Is Not Automatically Safe to Drink
