This site's audience isn't buying a tiny home off a lot — you're evaluating land, zoning, off-grid utilities, and rental income potential. The events and organizations that actually matter to that work are different from a tiny-home trade show. This guide covers the real ones: land investment conferences, ADU-specific expos, off-grid living events, short-term rental industry gatherings, and the official bodies that shape zoning and land-use policy.
- Bay Area ADU Expo (Sept 26–27, 2026, Oakland) is a genuine consumer-facing ADU event — a newer, regional category, not yet a mature national one.
- VRMA 26 Nashville (Oct 4–6, 2026) is the largest short-term rental industry conference, but it's for property managers and operators, not casual hosts.
- REALTORS® Land Institute (RLI) is the actual national trade body for land brokers — its ALC designation is the only land-specific credential backed by the National Association of REALTORS®.
- American Planning Association (APA) is the professional body for the planners who actually write zoning code — not consumer-facing, but the source of a lot of the policy you're navigating.
- No dedicated national ADU trade association exists yet — the space is still forming, mostly through regional expos.
1. Consumer-Facing Events
Bay Area ADU Expo
Billed as the premier ADU and tiny home event in the San Francisco Bay Area, aimed at homeowners, industry professionals, and housing leaders interested in ADU development, design, construction, and financing.1 This is a regional event, not a national one — worth noting since ADU-specific expos are still uncommon outside a handful of high-demand metro markets.
Off-Grid & DIY Build Summer Camp
A recurring hands-on event for people planning off-grid builds, with multiple 2026 sessions listed.2 Confirm the current session schedule directly, since recurring regional events like this can change format or frequency year to year.
2. Industry & Trade Events
These are built for professionals — property managers, land brokers, and planners — but understanding who attends them tells you a lot about who's actually shaping the rules and market you're operating in.
VRMA 26 Nashville (VRMA International Conference)
The largest annual gathering for short-term rental property managers and operators, hosted by the Vacation Rental Management Association. Drew nearly 2,000 attendees in 2025.3,4 Built for professional operators managing multiple listings, not a casual single-property host's first stop.
RLI National Land Conference
The REALTORS® Land Institute's premier annual event for land real estate professionals, marking its 20th anniversary in 2026.5,6 This year's conference has already passed by the time of this update; check RLI's site directly for the next scheduled date.
APA National Planning Conference
The flagship annual event for the American Planning Association, where professional planners gather to discuss zoning, housing, and land-use policy.7,8 Not open to the general public in any practical sense, but this is genuinely where a lot of the zoning trends covered elsewhere on this site originate. Next edition: Houston, May 2027.9
3. Official Organizations
REALTORS® Land Institute (RLI)
Founded 1944, one of the National Association of REALTORS®'s eight affiliate organizations. Offers the Accredited Land Consultant (ALC) designation, the only land-specific credential backed by NAR — a real signal of specialized land expertise if you're vetting a land broker.10,11
Vacation Rental Management Association (VRMA)
The primary trade association for the vacation rental and short-term rental management industry, hosting VRMA's annual international conference.3,4
American Planning Association (APA)
The professional association for urban and regional planners in the U.S. Its certification arm, the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP), certifies the professionals who write the zoning code you're researching on this site.8,9
Urban Land Institute (ULI)
A global nonprofit focused on land use research, education, and best practices across the real estate and development industry.12
On ADU-specific organizations: unlike land (RLI), short-term rentals (VRMA), or zoning (APA), ADUs don't yet have a single dedicated national trade association. The space is still emerging, showing up mostly as regional expos like the Bay Area ADU Expo rather than a mature national body. If that changes, we'll update this page.
Research record: Event dates were verified directly against each organizer's own site where possible, since third-party listing sites for niche regional events are sometimes stale. Two of the trade events listed (RLI National Land Conference, APA National Planning Conference) had already occurred by the time of this update; we included them anyway since they're genuinely useful to know about as annual fixtures, and noted their past-tense status clearly rather than implying they're still upcoming. Information last checked August 2026 — confirm current dates directly with each organizer before planning travel.
